Behaviorism has created many incompatible social learning theories that are influential in the field of personality psychology. In the foremost half of the 20th century, behaviorism focused on how environments conformity the behavior of organisms. The behaviorist view is behavior is learned in the environment (McAdams, 2009).
Utilitarians believe learning occurs through actions. with either positive, welcome ,or negative, painful events. In classical conditioning, an organism forms associations between different stimuli that are contiguous in time. Unconditioned stimulus produces unconditioned response. Conditioned stimulus produces conditioned response (McAdams, 2009).
In operative conditioning, learning occurs through rewards and punishments, as behavior is shaped by its consequences. Personality characteristics are formed primarily by reward-and-punishment learning that occurs in social billets over time.
