Almost like a footnote to the capital of Minnesota Bernardo trial, there has been considerable debate about whether or not Karla Homolka, Bernardos ex-wife, should be permitted to guard courses at Queens University. While serving 12 years for manslaughter, Homolka is taking correspondence courses in sociology. Some good deal have argued against permitting her to do this, musical composition others have just as strongly defended what energy be called her right to study.
To take courses in the faculty of arts and wisdom at Queens, candidates must meet certain academician standards. But while the university assesses candidates educational qualifications, it makes no attempt to broadside the moralistic worthiness of prospective students. Nor should it. There are no reliable methods by which an academic institution could assess the moral integrity of all its future students.
However, those who think Homolka shouldnt take university courses would probably say it is not moral criteria that should be utilise to assess prospective students, but good ones. A soul convicted of a crime should not be admitted to university.
But if the university were to egest students with criminal records, it would be usurping the role of the legal system.
In our democracy, legal punishment is set by the courts. It is not appropriate for universities to chip in further penalties by excluding people from tertiary education. The university is not an progress of the Corrections Service. There is no justification for punishing people twice.
Instead of advocating the exclusion of all persons with a criminal record, those who tender to bar convicted criminals from Queens would be on firmer understanding if they argued on the basis of the potential danger some persons might pose to members of the university community.
