Sarah scissure Hemings was an enslaved woman who was three-quarters European and owned by the recent President Thomas Jefferson. She was the half sister of Jeffersons of late wife Martha Wayles; the youngest of six children fathered by John Wayles and his slave Betty Hemings; the daughter of an Englishman, Captain Hemings and an African slave.
