The short storyAn exchange of niceties is lead off with the storyteller sharing her thoughts around her upcoming abortion. And that is a fairly good verbal translation of the narrators view of herself; insignificant. She does not feel like she has achieved anything in her life, or done anything of significance. She is unsatisfied about her life, and does not feel as though she will ever reach her enough potential, because she is unable to finish anything she begins. We do not hear much about her job, only that she works as a waitress, and that the salary is rather less than satisfying. It is mentioned that she has been shoplifting, and she considers herself bad countersignature which is her explanation to her mothers lac k of interest in her.
