They were used as slaves, they were tormented and hated by Whites, and at that place were organized hate groups such as the Klu Klux Clan workings against African Americans in every way. In 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped slaveholding using the Underground Railroad; she became one of the most efficient leaders in level. (Brunner, 2007) Harriet Tubman worked for a family in the south that didnt treat her well. Harriet suffered a head injury that her owner gave to her by beating her up and hitting her in the head. She suffered from seizures after that; she was coerce to work through the pain and carry on when she suffered from these episodes. She saved hundreds of slaves using the Underground Railroad. In 1863 President Lincoln issues the emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all persons held as slaves, within the Confederate states are, and hencefor state of ward shall be free. (Brunner, 2007) After the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, it allowed black men to yoke military forces. Although the Emancipation didnt abolish slavery, it gave men the chance to fight in the war. By the end of the civil war about 200,000 black men had fought for the juncture.

From the first days of the civil War, slaves had acted to secure their own liberty. The Emancipation Proclamation confirmed their pressure that the war for the Union must become a war for freedom. It added moral force to the Union cause and strengthened the Union both militarily and politically.
