The lives of ancient Greek women were highly restricted. According to Thucydides, the proper resplendence of a woman consists is not being spoken of in public. However, women argon portrayed as strong and significant characters on the comic stage. By being introduced to Aristophanes plays, one is able to give birth a glimpse into the male-dominated ancient Greek society where women struggled to be noticed. Women we meant to stay at home and have no index number over anything. However, it is predominate through Aristophanes Lysistrata, Thesmophoriazusae and Ecclesiazusae that women are not average sexually oriented and have the power to dominate over men whether it be through domestic situations, political situations, or sexual (self) situations.
Aristophanes took a very unique approach to composing plays. He wrote comedies, instead of taking the popular route of tragedy, and his plays were only original. His stories, plots, and characters were created from scratch. However, the themes in his plays would be the problems he saw in his drive home day Athens.
Some scholars see Athens as exclusively male-centered and misogynistic, and separates find it no more oppressive to women then other traditional societies. Most of our sources of elite texts and art work were produced by men.

In Aristophanes Lysistrata, women are seen as sexually active wives who are transformed into the comic heroes by denying their husbands any grapheme of sexual pleasure until they put an end to the war. This is seen through means of visual imagery and linguistic innuendo. The play opens with Lysistrata waiting in front of the entrance to the Acropolis for the women who she has called upon. She decided to call an assembly of Athenian women and a representative of Spartan women. She then explains her plan to them.
