“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “A Rose for Emily” by William Falkner are fine pieces of literature that deserve to be compared. The literary devices in these deuce stories apply similarities such as death and differences such as the t unrivaled of each story. The authors of each lead all distinct lives but each of their lives are encompassed in their work. Comparing and incompatible these two stories gives us insight into the authors own individual lot of murder and death.
In The Lottery the circumstance was in the townsfolk square on a clear summer daytime (Jackson, 1948). Shirley Jackson writes in a way that you give the sack literally feel the warmth of the sun, A Rose for Emily’s setting is in Emily’s lone(a) abandoned house (Faulkner, 1931). The analogy in these authors is that they are so descriptive when they write that you can actually picture yourself at that place.
The tone in both of these stories is completely different as well. In The Lottery the tone is ingenious and upbeat (Jackson, 1948). Everyone was socializing and having a good time (Jackson, 1948).
The sarcasm comes in at the decease when the reader finds out that by means of all of the fun the whole reason for being there is to have a sacrifice in order to have a good harvest (Jackson, 1948). In A Rose for Emily the tone is somber and sad. The story starts out at Emily’s funeral and from there goes back into her life (Faulkner, 1931). She led a lonely life and the one suer she had just left one day (Faulkner, 1931). The irony in this story comes in the end as well when the reader is lead to believe that Emily killed her suitor and his body is the one that the town found in her bed.
